Rappler: Revolutionizing Social News Media
Reimagining News for the Digital Generation
The Challenge
Helping a startup social news media carve its niche in the competitive world of online journalism was no small feat. The ask: create a mobile-first UI design for a responsive website and mobile application. With a lean team—just a UX designer and a front-end developer—we had to deliver exceptional design quality under tight deadlines. It was the kind of challenge where you take a deep breath, roll up your sleeves, and dive right in.
Design Approach
The strategy combined innovative design thinking with sharp execution to craft a platform that resonated with its audience.

I led the Experience Design vision, creating a mobile-first approach that prioritized adaptive, stunning visuals across devices. Collaborating closely with my team, we co-designed the Experience Map to outline user journeys and developed a navigation system anchored by a custom mega dropdown menu—because why settle for ordinary when you can create something exceptional? From concept to wireframes, we set the foundation for a cohesive and functional user experience with tailored templates for news stories and featured sections.

The process was rooted in understanding the user. Personas shaped by demographic insights guided the direction. We dug into extensive research on user behavior and benchmarked against top news platforms to ensure we weren’t just meeting expectations—we were raising the bar. Low-fidelity prototypes let us test ideas early, keeping us nimble and responsive to feedback. Collaborating with global teams, we transformed research outcomes into actionable, impactful designs that felt as good as they looked.
Learnings and Key Takeaways
Each phase of the project brought its own lessons, shaping the final product.

The rapid prototyping phase taught us the value of iteration. Early concepts didn’t land as intended—and honestly, some flopped—but they evolved into solutions users embraced. The tight-knit collaboration with writers, engineers, and news editors proved that when you mix perspectives, you get magic. As designers stepped into engineering roles, we learned to balance creativity with technical feasibility, pushing the boundaries of what the platform could achieve. (Pro tip: Knowing a bit of code makes you a design ninja.)

User research revealed the delicate balance between integrating social media elements and meeting the expectations for a credible news source. Data insights drove personalization, while transparency in content sourcing built trust. Regular feedback cycles with stakeholders and users ensured we stayed aligned with the platform’s vision.
The Outcome
The MVP generated the buzz we hoped for. By sparking curiosity and anticipation, the platform caught the attention of its social media audience. It became a conversation starter, inviting users to explore and engage with the vision behind it.

This project proved that purpose-driven design, combined with iterative development and collaboration, can make a lasting impact in a crowded digital landscape. Sometimes, all it takes is a bold idea and a team willing to see it through.
